Vince Gill. 3 minute mark. His phrasing, expression, holy cow. I like Brent Mason too but I was floored when I heard this short blues solo. It just drips. Anyone know anything about his guitar/pickups? I assume it's just old/stock/kickass...

Nice tone - is he in the bridge position on that?

I loved at the Grammy's when Vince won and recieved from Ringo and commented:
"I just got handed a Grammy from a Beatle - Ever do that Kanye"

...so fat 'n greasy. It's obviously not the neck and it doesn't sound out of phase and hollow like the in between.

I read somewhere that the neck pickup in Vince Gill's blackguard doesn't even work.

Vince Gill can flat out play his ass off, but what separates him from the others like Brent Mason is his great feel and emotion he puts into his playing. Brent almost sounds too mechanical to me. Don't get me wrong I like what he does, but i don't see many guys who have it like Vince.

I think so. Bridge pickup with the tone rolled of just a tad.

Vince is the man, and has it all.

I mean, what can you hate him for the most?

Is it his great guitar tone/playing/taste, his mandolin skills, his great songwriting, his voice, his sense of humor, his 1-handicap golf game, his babe wife, his success, or just the fact he comes across so damn likeable in spite of it all?

Sounds a bit like early 70s Jeff Beck to me. It's pretty much just bridge pickup Tele with a regular stomp-box OD tone, plus a little delay. Oh, and ferocious technique. Not 100% my thing, but I can see why you like it.

He usually alternates between the Riveras and two old blackface DR's.

If you don't have his new 4-cd album or haven't seen his live-at-the-Ryman video from last year then you need to. Simply, the sh$%. Best news songs out in a long time and people like Bekka Bramlett and Al Anderson (along with a who's who of Nashville players and singers) backing him up. Not to mention a new guitar on every song.

I wonder if Vince's tele doesn't have a truss rod. I say this because I have one that my friend Chris Fleming from the Fender Custom Shop made without a truss rod and Vince's guitar always reminds me of it when I hear him with that tele. There's a certain characteristic I hear in there. Anyone know?

Very tasty tone and phrasing for sure. Boss OD through a Rivera, huh? I may have to rethink my setup. :)
