Before I get hammered for using the term "modding and vintage" in the same sentence hear me out.
I too am against ANY mods to an original vintage guitar.
    Here is my situation.............
I have an amazing '64 SG Special with new everything.New paint, new electronics, etc. BUT 44 year old wood! OH MAN! Can't beat it!
    ( Pun intended)
This guitar is wonderful in every way EXCEPT I want a SG with humbuckers! I have more P90 guitars than I know what to do with too and market is terrible, lets face it.

I've tried on numerous occasions to sell this little cutie but to no avail and I have a set of Tom Holmes buckers just screaming to be used so I'm real close to dropping in buckers in my Special.
I have a luthier that is beyond good and it would look factory of that I'm sure.

Given the scenario, would it be wrong ?

    I'll await your thoughts/opinions.
    Thanks......................

I was faced with something similar recently. I was given a 65 Epi Riviera that was originally a 12 string was hacked at the headstock and made to a 6. I replaced all the hardware and had new frets put on, but the pickups were original and were just a little weak and not balanced. I decided what the hell and got some GFS phat mini humbuckers and had to have it routed a little to fit the slightly larger pickups. I looked at it this way, the wood is still old, and now the guitar sounds exactly how I wanted it too (like a 335 that cuts) and because of this, I'll be playing a whole hell of a lot.

GAS is a terrible thing to kill history.
A refin is one thing but routing is quite another.

I would go out and buy yourself a new or used SG with humbuckers and leave the vintage piece alone. personally, I would never rout a vintage guitar and change the pickups. I think it's nuts to do that.

Thanks guys and I just plugged it in and it would be "a crime" to do any routing to it. SHE is awesome just the way she is!

I've come to my senses ..............

Thanks to all here that truly understand a "momentary lack of reason".

Is this what AA is all about?

In your instance with headstock changes etc. it made perfect sense but in my case it just doesn't.
    Thanks for the reply though.

I'm pretty sure the Bill Lawrence L-500 series (the Bill Lawrence ones, not the Bill Lawrence USA ones) will fit into a mini-bucker slot, and will probably fit into a P-90 route. You should call them and ask if they will do the job.

I appreicate the idea but alot of my wanting to do this was to use some Tom Holmes humbuckers that I have lying around.

The Jason Lollar P90's that are in there now are well..........freakin' GREAT !

Why pick on this one - why not one of the other P90-equipped guitars gathering dust?

These are 20+ years old but brand new they'll fit. I'll sell them.
