So my set up is very basic. But I am not a pedals guy, never was. Like Buddy Guy used to say, the only thing between my guitar and my amp is my cable.

I have a zvex BoR and an EH Holy Grail. Currently, I have it this way:

Telecaster > BoR > HG > Carmen Ghia head > Avatar 2x12 Cab

Is there a rule of thumb in terms of what order the pedals should be configured in the chain?

no rules of thumb, trial and error mostly. usually it is reverb/echo/delay type tones last......overdrives first.

the interesting thing ive found is that i use a reverb, delay, trem i always got caught wondering chain order. i messed around and found what worked best to ME. and it was the old 50's style/60s fender way. reverb/echo BEFORE the trem and its killer.

do what sounds good to YOU

with a manageable number of pedals like you have, just try the various combinations and see what sounds best to you!!!!

I was reading Dave Hunters Effects Handbook..In it,one of the orders suggested has a chorus BEFORE the OD. I decided to try it,and havent moved it since. It just sounds better...
Just thought I'd throw that in the mix.

Hey Wax Head--How do like that 5:50? Killer arent they!?

Whats working for me right now goes like this : Tuner > Wah > Fuzz > Overdrive > Distortion > Modulation > Delay > EQ . The modulation ( chorus/vibe ) and Delay might be better in a effects loop but my amps don't have that option. Trial and error, spending some time with different layouts is part of the admission price and 1/2 the fun.
