Out of control, mind-destroying wah sounds? (Grinderman content.)

I've been without a wah for a few years now. I was kind of over it. I'm tired of the standard quacky wah sound and have had problems with the switches on some of them. I like noise, however and for my new project, I think it might be time to start fiddling with a wah again. One of my favorite wah sounds is below:

At 3:22 all hell breaks loose. I want to get a wah to sound like that. I know Warren Ellis uses an old Colorsound Fuzz wah. Is a fuzz-wah necessary to0 get this type of over-the top tone mangling? I've never used a fuzz into a wah or a wah into a fuzz before. Is there a dedicated fuzz-free wah that is capable of a crazy sounds like that? Discuss...

Wah's more prominent on the studio version:



Look at some of the Teese or Wilson models or any other wah with adjustable Q.

That and a fuzz pedal with a lot of gain. (Wah after fuzz.)

Yeah the Colorsound is routed Fuzz-Wah and the wah has a much wider sweep than the vox and crybaby types.

Pretty much any fuzz into a Zvex Wah Probe will cop that sound. The Zvex is close to the colorsound circuit.

Another possibility is the new Moog Minifooger Drive pedal, which has a controllable step-filter built in. I haven't tried one yet but it seems like it might get close to that sound.

The Colorsound Wah Fuzz is a fantastic suggestion. It will definitely get you into this territory....

I don't know why, but I've always had an aversion to "boutique," pedal makers such as ZVex. Probably because I'm cheap. Maybe it's time to check them out.

If it makes you feel any better the Vexter version is the one to get. They updated it with a mix and peak control so you can tweak the wah sweep and make it very subtle or in-your-face depending on your needs.

Having the SHO onboard means its a great booster too and you use the peak and mix control to make it a mid-booster or a psuedo treble boost, as well as dial out the wah and use it as a straight SHO.

With the price of the Colorsounds these days I don't know a way to get that sound much cheaper.

I had a RMC3 for years (not the RMC3FL model). It was my main wah.

It's certainly capable of lots of different sounds. I'm not sure it's exactly what you're looking for on its own. Although, in combination with some other pedals, it can be.

I'm interested in trying out the Eqwahlyzer or the Wheels of Fire.

Hey mate.

I just recorded some of my wah for you. Not sure it's exactly what you're after but this wah puts me in the 'crazy' zone. Aside from being deeper and sharper than a crybaby my TWA Triskellion adds an upper octave when the toe is down. The clip doesn't really capture the intensity of it's sound, but that's mobile phone recordings for you :p
