A Precision has fewer controls that aren't interactive as to not confuse a guitarist attempting to play the bass.

Another issue: the bigger P neck forces you to play bass rather than "Guitar licks on a bass" that some J players fall into. I have long fingers and have a natural affinity for larger necks; I find that the occasional awkwardness with my Ps that have the 7.25" radius and the wider nut make me think about my note choices more...and the sound of a P is so much better (in my opinion) than the J that there's no contest. In fact, when I showed up one time at sound check with a J, I was sent home to get the P by the other guys in the band.

I understand that a lot of players love the J, but I've not played one in years.

J bass has more excellent tonal options, P bass does what it does, which just happens to be excellent... I have one of each neither made by fender.

I have three modded Precisions with added regular passive J pups, none of them are noisier than a Jazz Bass, in fact they're less noisey.
it's good to find a J pup that matches the output level of the P pup, but even if you don't there's still a sweetspot you can find when balancing the the levels between the two.
