Nice. What do you think that pedal is that Pat's playing through? Seems like I hear a Phaser - maybe it's a Phase 90?
I remember reading about how much Pat hated that guitar, but I never saw any video of him playing it.

What a great find. Thank you for sharing this @Eric Rowland. One of the things that's always impressed me is Burton's fluidity as an improviser. The ideas just flow so freely.

That trio plus Antonio Sanchez on drums toured behind a record in 2009 I believe and I was fortunate to see them at the Ottawa Jazz festival.

I then saw the Unity Band last year. Metheny's growth as a musician over the years is just stunning.

It was just pure luck finding the vid. There's another one from this time period at an outdoor gig in Norway (Ted Mithiny!). I saw Gary with Steve, Makoto Ozone and Adam Nussbaum years ago and you always marvel at Gary's ideas and fluidity, as you mentioned. Pat was 19 in the vid and was in the shadow of the rest of the cats. That didn't last long! After Mick went his way, Pat took over and it wasn't long before Pat and Gary were at odds over musical direction. Time to leave the nest. Yes indeed, Pat's ferocious work ethic and immense talent have resulted in stunning growth. There are some great vids on YT of the group with Antonio. I'm glad Pat insisted to Gary that Antonio play with them....and glad Gary agreed!

What a great time capsule. Burton is sort of like the John Mayall of jazz guitar, in terms of discovering young monsters.

That looks my old Epiphone Emperor! The pick guard looks exactly like a custom one I had made for me. Probably not but who knows?

Thanks for posting this. That's my favorite era for Gary Burton. Just a brilliant musician at a historic peak.

One of the things that caught my ear was when Burton was "bending" notes on the vibes.

I thought they were channeling Jimmy Stewart during their interview. lol
I would have hated playing that 12 string in that context.

Apparently Pat likes Earth Wind & Fire and Chicago too.

Just commenting on the 70's style. The attire is now thrift store material. And the facial hair ironic among some of today's younger crowd. Their look would fit right in in some 2016 circles. Yet, they are hipsters not because of style...but because of their playing. OG hipsters.

    Thanks for posting! Great video.

There are many more outstanding videos on that site, including some rare stuff by Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal. There's even some footage of Ralph Towner rehearsing with his Solstice band. Wow.

Nevermind his gear or the guitars he uses--what brand of beanie does he use to contain that mane?!
