I have sent my Les Paul to Pat and had him strip it so we could see what the top is like and then he is refinishing it for me. It was a black LP that was mostly original and has a long neck tenon. I love the feel of the guitar and plan to keep it for a long while.

My paint thoughts started with having it made into a goldtop if the top was ugly. If the top was decent I planned for a burst or something.

Here are pictures of the stripped body:

The middle picture shows a spot that they did not want to sand further near the neck joint. They can touch it up with a little more brown to cover it.

But as you can see the top is a plain book matched top. So I am having the top finished in a dirty lemon drop. My finishing example that I sent is here:

Now I know it is a plain plain top so I don't expect flame where there is none but I think this will turn out rather cool.

Plain top burst > flame top burst anyway! I bet it'll turn out great.

Is Pat spraying it with nitro or poly?

You're in good hands with Pat, no doubt.

Personally, with that top I'd go for an color finish that you love (not normally seen in the LP world). Copper/Orange Top would be on my list. Darker natural back/neck finish, oh yeah. But then I don't like plain tops and it's your guitar. ;)

This one's been seen here before but I never tired of sharing Pat's work (or this guitar!):

I really never asked poly/nitro. It was poly before and sounded great.

I have had a Candy Tangerine strat that I painted and had MJT relic.
Love that guitar! Looks awesome. Yes the brown back instead of red is my choice.

I could see the slow curve of the book matched top, coming off the center seem, by the way the lacquer had sunk into the finish.

Pat uses only Poly because of the restrictions in California.

I look at and grade hardwood all day long and it's just so effing boring.:)
It all starts to look the same, and I guess I'm over the perfect book matched exceptional woods.

I like that's it's bookmatched, but not perfect. The mineral streaks add alot of character. The way the grain busts up at the controls, and arm rest...cant wait to see it finished! Its gonna make the top carve look really deep. Good color choice too!

Got a friend a Custom Pat Wilkins guitar and 20 some odd years old it looks spectacular. Ferrari red and it has all sorts of colors blue, green and purple in it. Fantastic looking guitar and I can only find one pic with it in the shot [IMG]

I used to send bodies to pat. His too thick poly finishes were ok , but the last thing I sent him was a koa topped tele, wanted the koa natural & the rest of the body butterscotch!! The body was soo ugly, the butterscotch looked like baby-poo-mustered color- no more Pat wilkins finishes

Pat’s finishes are flawless. I don’t think they are too thick at all. His finishes just have a really deep wet look, because he gets the clear coats super level with great gloss.

I had already fallen for this guitar enough that I put Dr. Vintage pickups and RS Guitarworks pots n caps. The last additions will be Kluson bridge and lightweight tailpiece as well as some Schaller tuners.
    Freakin psyched.

Hard to go wrong with a gold top on an LP, but the lemon burst is my favorite Gibson translucent LP finish.

Be sure and post when she's done.
