I'm thinking a compressor is probably what I need, specifically a barber tone press. I'm just looking for something to boost / equalize the double-handed tapping parts that might otherwise sound a little weak compared to normal strums / picking. I don't really want to alter my tone or drive it, just boost. Any suggestions?

i would say either a compressor or a tube screamer type pedal that boosts the mids.

I'm not sure that I want to change the tonal characteristics though, I like the more mid-low sound of tapping, I just need to raise the levels to achieve unity gain.

I'd definitely say compressor then. I regularly use my EH compressor to boot solo lines and tap runs.

Hmm, looks lie my analogman dd5 or analogman ar20dl will be funding the purchase of a tone press.

Yup, a compressor or a tubescreamer-type pedal would do it.
