I know that sounds broad and applies to a lot of pedals, playing styles etc.

... but I’m putting together a small 4-5 pedal board that I want to use for ambient and ominous sounds. So I’d like to hear what some of you have used with success.

Really any suggestions for creating darker sounds.

As of now I was interested in the Caverns, Canyon and CB Mood pedal. Some good info in those threads.

If I missed a dedicated thread to this sorry. Didn’t see one.

My seriously dark and moody ominous sound is referenced to Bridge of Sighs.
Which I have always found very dark, ominous, and moody sounding.
A good throbby-ass vibe set Really Slow going into a Coldcraft Sweet Kiwi MkII.
Followed up by a really slow analog (dark repeats) delay with 2-3 repeats.
The Kiwi is a lot (sound-wise) like a Skreddy Lunar Module, but voiced Way darker.
I actually have those two sitting side-by-side on a board now.
That combination sounds like the blackest, darkest Hurricane storm clouds you've ever seen are approaching.
That's my Ominous sound, and its the shite.

    Speaking my language, here.

Check out the Industrialelectric RM-1N. It's a fuzz and reverb and... well, it's all the things you described, plus terrifying and awesome looking.
I can speak volumes about the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Black Fountain. The Adineko mentioned above will be in a similar space.
I feel like I mention it in every other post I make, but the Digitech Obscura does some REALLY cool things, and it does it in a very small form factor and for way less money than is reasonable. It has a hold feature by turning the feedback past 3 o'clock. One of the coolest things I did was crank the wow and flutter on the tape delay setting, got it going, then held it and listened to it degrade infinitely. Super ominous and yet still musical.
Don't knock it till you try it - the TC Electronic T2 Reverb has some really moody sounds in it. I'm fond of I (which slowly and randomly drifts the pitches up and down) and E1, which makes it sound a little like there's a helicopter in the distance - or a silent black helicopter right outside your window. Very cool little box.
It may sound silly, but a looper with reverse and 1/2 speed functions may do a LOT for you. Sometimes the most normal sounding thing gets really weird when played backwards. Then when you record forwards over it again, then flip it back around, it can get super cool. If the plan is to do this live with a band, that may be less useful, but for recording could be super neat.
A lot of people really like the Montreal Assembly Count to 5.
Finally, I think (if you can do it) I'd go with a Grand Canyon over the regular Canyon - both sound great, but the GC has presets and can do pitch shifting in a way the Canyon can't (the Canyon only has octaves).

Good luck! Would love to hear some samples!

The Caroline Meteore can do dark Lynchian/Lanoisian soundscapes that are truly wonderful to hear and experience.
