I have two, the Barber Barb EQ and the Maxon AD999. I use them both to make my little Gibson amp sound bigger. No obvious delay happening, and the EQ either adds some treble or cuts the mids for a Fender blackface sound. A lot of money for that little something that does big things for a 5W amp and 8" speaker.

Quite a contrast to my early days of turning all knobs to 10 to get my money's worth out of an effect.

Clearly any EQ would fit into this category, but I also find some reverbs (at least they way I like using them) fit this category.

    Subtle Compression
    subtle Delay or reverb
Clean boost (left on between sets)

That's about it. Everything else (OD or modulation) is pretty obvious except EQ pedals which I don't use.

my delay. it's strange, when i let other players play my rig, they notice the delay but i guess i'm so used to hearing it that i'm oblivious.

I think the ultimate winner in this category can only be a noise suppressor.

I always felt that if you were using a noise suppresor that maybe your rig is not set up efficiently. With a combination of true bypass pedals with a few with good buffers, why would one need a noise suppresor at all?

Noise suppressors are handy when you have a very high gain amplifier, or a very high gain pedal. Not very hard to get noisy if you are stacking distortions and maybe even some compression. I turn my smartGate off when playing without distortion, but when running the MT-2 and Jekyll at the same time it can get noisy at high volume.

Ross compressor definately is very transparent in my rig. Only compresses slightly and adds a little sustain.

I don't own one, want to though.
I've heard this mentioned about the ClinchFX EP-pre.

Diamond Comp and (believe it or not) a vintage Rat. That pedal is so dynamic that it acts like an amp in a box. Very transparent.
