That is the (in)famous Rhythem/Lead circiut...

The slider switch up top switches between either the 2 roller pots next to it or to the 3 way toggle and the 2 normal knobs...the first being the rhythem and the second being the lead circiut...

The rhythem setting has no pickup selector and runs (I think) both pickups through a fat cap and the 2 roller knobs are volume and tone.

The lead selection bypasses all that and runs the pickups to the 3 way toggle (neck, bridge or both) wiht a typical master volume, master tone...

The lead selection is fine but the other is pretty much a joke...

Hmmm... I guess the rhythm circuit (which is the neck pick-up only) isn't generally popular, but I quite like the darker, rounder sound of it on my '64, and find it pretty useful for the rhythm/ lead switcheroo...

The only position I could use was the middle on the toggle switch, since it was the only one that was hum cancelling. Thank goodness it was my fave tone anyhow!

I've seen a few posts saying that it is well worth the money to change out the Jap electronics/pickups to something else, correct?

i have the same issue with my JM and find that the only usable setting is the middle position. the other two are noisy. does switching out the pickups solve this??????
