I have a Retro-Sonic phaser on its way to me. I run a clean amp setup, using pedals for all dirt.

Obviously I'll be experimenting, but I wanted to get a feel for where you guys run phasers - pre or post OD pedals in the chain?

    Cheers
    Jordan.

which ever way sounds better to you man !

Thats why it's so much fun....there are no rules !!

I actually have an od both before and after my phase 90. With OD AFTER a phase you can almost get an organic VIBE type quality.......or the evh/joe walsh slow phase sound during solos.

With OD BEFORE the phase, the sound is much more prounounced - Think of Ernie Isleys brilliant guitar work in " who's that lady "

That a big muff into a phase 90 I think.............

So like jaywalker said - Both !!!

After! The whoosh is huge. If it's too much, you can always back the intensity off.

Before the od, you phase the full signal; usaully sounds more lush. Try both though like everyone has already stated. I've been running my od after and my fuzz before.

    Depends on the phaser.
A really intense phaser eg maxon ph350 sounds better after dirt.
something more meek eg phase 90 sounds better before.
I like phase after delay after dirt... can get really psychadelic for that all out solo peaking moment!

I tried it before, and didn't like it at all.
After dirt sounds the way it should IMO

They're both very distinct sounds. I prefer it before dirt, as it seems to me that I really HEAR the phase after dirt but I FEEL the phase as a more subtle texture before dirt. After dirt seems more in your face swirly to me.

    Can you dig it?

    I knew that you could...

I also prefer my phaser before od, but I actually like it better after fuzzes. The more pronounced phasing sounds great after a fuzz, but I like to phase the clean signal before I run it through something like a Tubescreamer. It is more like phasing before going into a distorted amp.
There are definitely times for exceptions though.

I prefer my Phase & Vibe before dirt. I find it blends better.

I use my Retro-Sonic Phaser before my dirt boxes, but it sounds great either way. Experiment and decide for yourself.

I use mine post compressor which works better with my block logo pre-Dunlop Phase 90. It evens out the peaks which tend to distort (even after the R-28 and C-12/13 mods). I tend to think of the phaser as a mild filter effect, and I feel filter effects sound better before overdrive and distortion. The other way has merit too, but doesn't work for the tones I want to hear.
