I need help choosing a new phaser under $100. I have heard the MXR script 90, block 90, and the EHX small stone. I did not like the block 90 so I am undecided between script 90 and small stone? Any advice, recommendations? How's the present quality on these units? Are there other units under $100 I should be considering?

Small Stone and Phase 90 would be the two obvious choices--they're the "standard" phasers, if you will.

I like them both. I've kept my Whirlwind (essentially an original-circuit Phase 90) instead of my Small Stone, but part of that was the bog box which I had no way to power. Now that I've got power supplies and everything, I'd love to have another.

IMO, the Small Stone is more versatile because of the Color switch, which allows you to go from a shallow phase to a really deep, throbbing one. The Phase 90 is more of a quintessential sweeping phase sound--I'd probably recommend this to begin with.

Either can be had for under $100, but you may have to go used.

Love the original, big box, Small Stone.
Best bang for the buck if you're looking for a warm phaser, very good for any musical style.

i take there isn't/shouldn't be any difference in sound when comparing big small stone to the nano small stone?
I like the small stone for the color switch versatility. I wished most phasers came with a depth option. The only type of modulation I has seen that often comes without.

Is whirlwind like the original phase 90?

Well that isn't very punk, is it?
I'd go with an old Small Stone. The big box reissue is good too, and a lot cheaper(in your price range), but there's something... off about the nano. It clashed with other effects in a weird way.

used Phase 100, too..I dig it a little more than the 90, although I'm certainly in the minority. Nano Small Stone is not bad, either.

Visual Sound Garagetone OilCan Phaser.....mouthful, but it's around $50 and probably the best phaser I've used. Great depth.

Boss PH2 is also great. Has a very useful "Mode II".

Oilcan phaser, never heard of it but it has some good reviews, not many but they're there. What's the consensus on the oilcan?? IT HAS A DEPTH KNOB

yep, not a lot of reviews on it, but they're good. It's not very old and it's cheap (which many people see as a problem apparently....lol).

    Depth knob is very responsive.

What about Retrosonic?? They make some tip-top pedals. I see they have one on the market. I should set up a poll between whirlwind, mxr90 script, ehx small stone, oilcan phaser and retrosonic

45?? holy crap, the options. I thought a phaser search under $100 would leave me without many options. What did I get myself into?

Just searching for a MXR phaser will drive you crazy.

It's good to compare the Phase 90 and Small Stone to each other. The others are pretty much based off these.

Do you like Incubus? Lots of phaser in there. Lots.

I like Zeppelin Achillies last stand or Floyd's Shine on phaser sounds. To me it's a subtle phase, not too wet. That's why the phase 90 script appealed to me. Seemed warmer and more natural. But yeah, I like Incubus older phaser tones.

Used BYOC Phase Royal can be bought in that price range. It would get my vote.

Good luck finding a Retrosonic in your $100 budget.
