In order to find out if there are certain cabsims (based on whatever technology) that are generally preferred, I recorded a cheesy riff a couple of times, and the only difference between the takes is the different "cab".

Now have a listen to this track (you can also download it if that's more convenient to you)...

... and then pick your favorite from the list (single choice only!).

And don't even start like "I can't tell, because I don't know what the final mix should sound like" ;). Just pick the one that you like best the way it is now. Imagine that there will be no additional elements in this "mix", maybe except for a singer on top of it or a guitar solo after two thirds of the song... much like an early Crue record.

For those interested: Each sample has been double-tracked. The only post-processing was rough level-matching and applying the same reverb to all the samples.

    Thank you for taking part.

And oh yeah... don't read any replies in this thread before you have made your decision. ;)

4 sounded the most balanced to me.

Agreed, I chose 4 but 6 was very similar.

To my ear, sample 1 had the boldest midrange presence for cutting through a mix but a bit too dark for me in general. Would probably clash with vocals but might be good for classic lead tones.

Sample 4 sounded the most neutral for a good mix with other parts added later.

Nothing to do with peer pressure... it sounded like someone deliberately chose 5 IRs that sounded like @$$, one that was tolerable (Sample 5) and one that was good: 4! :dunno :huh

I didn't think any of the cabs sounded decent, but I liked 5 the most with 4 being a very, very close second.

7 is the one I'd go with if it were my project. To me it has attitude and personality without being too extreme. The others either sounded congested, nasal or generic by comparison.
