This should be interesting. I had my 97 Marshall 1959SLP redone with all Mercury Magnetics tranny's and am picking her up in the morning from Schroeder Audio in Chicago tomorrow.

Long story short.....my power tranny was shot. The only thing that I think could have done it was a power surge. My rig is in the basement. I had the amp on standby, and the circuit breaker blew during a rain storm when the sump pump kicked on - shut everything off. Next time I turned the amp on, the mains blew instantly. Pulled the four RFT/Siemens power tubes - and the amp ran but, in about 30 seconds an nice ember glow came form below the chassis and she started smoking. Turned her off instantly.

Took her in to Schroeder and bad news - power tranny shot. The amp NEVER blew the fuse while I was playing. So, I had them replace the power tranny with a Mercury Magnestics and I decided what the heck - let's do the full upgrade with the choke and OT.

They called me this week and she's ready to go. The EL-34s all checked out okay too! Strage! Brian, the amp tech, said she sounds amazingly better! I'm excited to pick her up and crank it up!

Anyone else do a tranny upgrade on a Marshall Plexi RI?

I have a mercury power transformer in my 75 Superlead. I actually prefer a replacement with a lower voltage as I prefer more crunch over added headroom. I am sure it will sound nice with the new quad of tubes etc. let us know what u think.

Thanks JP - will do. Funny thing is the quad of RFT/Siemens EL34s tested good to go - so I'm really looking forward to hearing it with the same tubes!

I have two JTM45's. One with Marstrans and one with MM's. They are both awesome.
I got to play a JTM45 RI a while ago. Just wasn't the same thing. Nice amp...just not the same though. I'm a big lover of KT66's though and am also convinced that the tranny's play a big part.

I have two Concert Reverb II Fender amps. One of them had the power transformer blow and I replaced it with a MM one.

    I still can't hear a difference.

I did the mercury on my 1959slp and the distortion changed... it cleaned it up too much. I put the original Dagnall back in and the distortion was back and how I like it.

Should sound much Better than the stock iron
But it may be harder to overdrive.

Just got her back. Haven't plugged in yet. Hopefully later. I've got a couple big paper weights now. Is it worth rewinding the power tranny?

Also picked up Schroeder's Apollo OD pedal while I was there!

You'll spend more than its worth to rewind that tranny

OT question, but what are his prices like? I've never seen them posted on his website or elsewhere.

Hmmm - frustrated. Blew the mains fuse as soon as I flipped standby! Has to be the tubes. Will swap tubes tomorrow and report back! Frustrating as the amp tech said he checked them (they do have some miles/hours on them - NOS RFT/Siemens).

That sucks. No offense, but this thread just confirmed my decision to stick to boutique plexi replicas like Metro/Germino or vintage Marshall. I hope you get your amp up and running soon man. Nothing like a 100w SLP cranked up!!
