Pickup wiring question

I came across this pickup in my parts drawer. It's a humbucker, maker and model unknown, can't remember where I got it. It's a single conductor, but there's no shield, it has a rubber coating, just a center conductor and a rubber outer coating. How can this work, how did it ever work? There has to be a ground of some sort right? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, there has to be a return path for the current (like a shield). It must have been removed at some point.

Either the outer jacket has pulled out over the shield and hidden it, or the pickup was originally wired like a Fender pickup with two separate wires and one of the two came off. Please post a picture.

Try cutting a half inch off the lead to see if that exposes a braid that got scrunched up under the insulation.
