humbucker or coil pickups? what is the difference? and what is preffered?

Humbucker or Single coil?

Wiki would be best for that, but to keep it simple....

Clasic Fender tones = Single coil

Glasic Gibson Tones = Humbucker

Single coil are generally brighter sounding and are more prone to noise.

Humbuckers are usually darker and are better at coping with noise.

Beyond that there are loads of combinations such as noiseless single coils, coil splitting tapping etc.
