So, what sort of piezo pickup would you recommend for a diy depression era cigar box guitar build (I know there were no piezos back then, so not fully authentic). Thanks!

Go to an electronics store and get a piezo buzzer. Pull it apart and use the piezo element inside.

I put 2 of these from radio shack under the bridge on my fretless Pbass, sounds great with no preamp, I just connected the leads to a mini toggle to turn it on.

Cool idea. Anything else ready-made and simple?

eBay has a lot of choices.

C.B. Gitty is another source of cigar box guitar parts, especially if you don't want to wait on the slow boat from China.

I've done the same on a Samick dreadnought. Sounds good.
If you want prefab, use this, which is the same type sensor potted in a wooden puck

I had one and loved the sound until I mishandled and damaged it.

Or if the idea or digging the piezo out of the buzzer housing is what you dislike get this
