I'm a Marshall guy and haven't really had any experience with boutique amps. Went to Tone Merchants over the weekend and tried a couple just to see what I've been missing. I tried a Bad Cat 212 combo, a Cornford 112 combo and a Germino Masonette into a 112. Didn't like the Bad Cat at all. Over the top fizzy distortion and too many knobs to fiddle with. Perhaps I didn't have it dialed in right. The Cornford was OK. Sounds alot like my Jubilee, diode clipping and all. Not a bad amp but too much like my Jube. The clear winner was the little Germino. Boy do I like the sound of that thing! Tone for days. And loud for only 25 watts. Much louder than my Jube on its half power setting.
Wouldn't you know, I like the discontinued model that belongs to the store's owner and it's not for sale. For those who are familiar with the Masonette, any suggestions on other amps that will get me the plexi-ish type of tone. I know another Germino will do it but they told me it's taking at least 6 months to get one. A little too long of a wait for me. What else should I be looking at? Marshall 2061, Mojave Coyote, Rockytop, what else?
thanks
