Please explain how these switches work...

I'm talking about the pup switches like on the older MIJ's that have the 8 holes in a row instead of for on each side. I have but can't seem to wire it up right.

These switches are usually (there may be exceptions, I guess) split down the middle. The center lugs are commons, so they go something like

What do commons mean? So would 1 mean neck, 2 middle, 3 bridge pup? Or would it be reverse that with 3 being the neck connected to the first common?

Also, how is the other side wired? Thanks alot? I just don't get these and it should be too easy. But everytime I try to hook one up it's wrong.
