    Some guidelines:
    • Include all the stuff you own as a musician (PA systems, recording gear, software, cables, amps, pedals, guitars, basses, synths, accessories, …)
    • Generally, go with the money you spent when you got something (only adjust if value significantly changed, e.g. vintage Strat you got for $500)
    • Just include your private collection (if you are a dealer or make a living working on guitars)
    • If you cannot remember the prices, estimates are totally ok. But it’s a good exercise to know how much you spent on gear to reduce your GAS
Some things I’ve learned over the years:
    • You lose around 40% when selling gear you got new
    • Selling used gear pretty much goes for the same price you got it for
    • Owning an instrument that truly inspires you is well worth it (you can find these at any price point, but generally chances are higher with more expensive instruments, because more time and better recourses were invested to build them)
    • Buying guitars online hardly results in a guitar that you fully connect with. Best to "run the racks" or buy from people you know / can visit before you buy
    • Gear demos are great, but you never truly know how something sounds until you’ve played it with your own hands
    • Quality cables are worth the money
    • Music can be an expensive hobby, but the joy it brings is priceless (playing is more important than "gear")

It's not the size mate, it's how you use it.

    Good spot.

The top 3 value TGP’ers win a year of gear storage in a vault?

It’s funny that I have what I consider to be a very reasonable and modest collection.

Yet I’m likely in the top 1% of what guitarists own :p

Guessing vintage? I never really did the math, just realized a significant amount of my value is in acoustics I play a fraction of the time but hold deep sentimental (and moderate actual) value.

Not at all. Single digit guitars, 3 tube amps, AX8 get me in the 10k category already, easy.

I reckon most non-TGP guitar players get a MIM strat and a Marshall DSL or something like that and get on with playing :)

Have simply gotten rid of all electric guitar gear. I've got one old worthless POS Epiphone acoustic and a Harley Benton kids' acoustic.

Thanks, nice rig man. Wish I could purge a bit with electrics. I am willing to bet lots of folks have more than 150 tied up in guitar cables.

Two Steinway Grand Pianos and two pedal harps push mine up pretty high. If it was just guitar equipment, I would be just south of 10K (for four guitars and a small combo modeling amp).

I almost went with the ISO/IUPAC norm using spaces, but went for more cultural diversity :D

I don't have a big collection of any one instrument (only one electric guitar, one bass, etc), but I do have a preferance for nice gear, and I play a lot of instruments (guitar, bass, drums, some vocals) and I have a modest home studio setup.

I'm definitely well above $10,000, although I dare not try to make a more detailed estimate for fear of the real total being even higher

Currently 4 electrics, 1 bass. One amp for each and about 8 pedals. <5k. I guess I should post in the frugal guitarist thread
