A month or so ago I picked up a heavily toured early PRS Core Mira. The hardware had been pretty decently tarnished, the pickups had cheap Gibson 498/500t’s in there and black poly finish was heavily chipped, around the body and headstock but being poly, it looked really bad. Somehow the frets are still in great shape though.
I’ve stripped that ghastly black poly and the undercoat off, bought a Seymour Duncan SH5/Jazz set, sanded from 120 - 320 grit, grain filled it and sanded again to 400 grit. I’ve left the original black headstock finish on the back to keep the serial number and on the front to keep the logo.
This week I’ll spray a nitrocellulose sealer over it and sand to 400 grit again, but for now I need to decide what nitro finish to spray it in.
TV Yellow? Shell Pink? Pelham Blue?
Something else, like a Tung oil or stain?
The plan is to sand the finish off the neck and seal, but I’m keen to hear thoughts on the actual guitar colour.
(Here’s the guitar just prior to grain filling and sanding...)

That would look great in Pelham Blue! TV yellow would be cool too. Not a big fan of pink on guitars.

Gotcha - I’m mindful that PRS was inspired by vintage Gibson Juniors so a little tribute by way of colour could be cool. I didn’t put Cherry as an option cos I’m not a fan of that colour unless it’s on an SG Jr...

Although I would vote for TV yellow, if you've already grain filled, you are beyond being able to give it a proper finish. Normally you would spray several coats of the yellow, fill with black grain filler, and spray another thin coat or two over that. That give the semi-translucent finish with the grain visible of the really nice TV yellow finishes. You could just do it anyway and would probably still look okay, but it would be a solid color with no visible grain.

I do prefer fully opaque, but I think there will be some grain coming through anyway if it’s a lighter coloured finish. I won’t be going heavy handed with the nitro and the grain filler wasn’t excessive - just enough to stop too much soaking in of the finish.

I would go with TV yellow. It's a classic color for an all mahogany body.

    Cool project.

Of all those colors, I think pelham blue would really make it pop, though you probably couldn't go wrong with any of them.

Keep this thread running so we can see the progress.

If you paint it pink you gotta put a big "hello kitty" outline in white behind the bridge.. but my money would go on an aged TV yellow finish, satin on the back of the neck & a suitably aged Tortoiseshell pick guard, Nickel hardware, Kluson aged white plastic "butterbean" tuners (yes they do a locking version too) cream or aged white switch tip etc... you get the idea.. looking aged but cool

Epiphone had a series a few years ago, tv silver that was cool... I tried TV aged bronze on a Hamer with metallic gold grainfiller

Pelham blue - cause it would look good on this guitar and because it's quite rare.

A slight detour here, but what method did you use to remove the old finish?

Oh, and I vote Pelham Blue.
