Hey, looking to spend under 2 grand for an amp. 15-30 watts should be enough. looking to get somethign similar to a Two Rock/BF sound. Any suggestions? Combo or Head/Cab is cool.

    BTW, I can't equate a $2k amp, any amp, as being a poor man's amp :)

    Yeah, what he said: above!

I'd like to spend more like 1.5k =P A used DRRI costs about 750-850 on Toronto's CL

That sound is about big iron. I'm not sure you're going get that sound under 30 watts.

Yeah, I was expecting a $450 budget. There are tons of choices in that range. Used TR or Fuchs. I see you mentioned BF tones. If you're into the Mayer/Classic Reverb tones definately look into the used Pure 64's in the emporium. Add a Zendrive or Howie type pedal and you are set.

Thing is, I play mostly for church purposes, and at a small one at that. I could never crank up the amp to get that sweet sound.

Maybe go have a peek at Henry's Red Plate amps - it might be what your'e looking for, particularly if you can get one used.

You could find a used legit BF deluxe reverb, pro reverb, or maybe even a beat up twin reverb in that range.

What is it about the two-rocks you like? The cleans or OD?

Mainly the amazing smooth cleans. (no lie I'm a huge Mayer fan. I like how he packages the old and the new together in a very marketable form.) But I also want to be able to get those singing blues solos he gets out of those amps.
The pedals I don't worry about. I can trade/sell those easily but I don't want to be doing that with the amp. Something simple as well. (unlike the Mark V lolol)

How about a Brown Note D-lite!

I played one recently at Tone Merchants. Great tones for reasonable $$$$

I didn't like using my Two-Rock for church (contemporary Christian music). It didn't really cut through. I think they are mainly great for lead guitar settings as in the guitar player being the focus.

Blackface Bandmaster on an 8 ohm alnico speaker in an open back cab.
If you shop around you'll still have 1500 bucks left to tweak it into whatever shape you need.

Funny, a few guys have mentioned Fuchs..I Don't find Bill and Andy's work to be too similar. And I have never played a Two Rock model that has the same sound/tonal configuration as another model.. thats a pretty general 'want'.. kind of like saying I want a BMW or a Pizza or something..

At any rate, Why not try a BF Vibrolux? or even a BF Showman or Bandmaster. I have found that with the right speaker configuration all of these amplifiers get amazing cleans and, if your style allows it, you can dig in for some sweet bluesy tones. Maybe try a nice fuzz or od pedal with one too and call it a day?

Like I have probably said before on a few threads, the player is what counts- NOT THE AMP. If you find something that works for you and what you need then grab it, even if it doesnt have the name you want on the amp. I know a great player who picked up a Two Rock a few months ago and has tried dozens of speakers and cabinets (in fact he was at my house this morning) and he was really bummed out because it just didnt sound right to him.. when I said he should maybe try something else he half snapped back and said "But I really want to play a Two Rock."... They are not simple amps and they arnt for everyone, hence my nod for a good old fender.

You can always find a K&M custom or an older TR for around the loot you are looking to drop on this forum or some other place like ebay or craigslist.. just do your homework, not all of Bill's stuff is the same.. Best of Luck.
