Jason & the Scorchers
Laid the groundwork for a lot of the Americana and alt-country bands today:
They were a mashup of country, metal and punk.
Don't see either Devo or Talking Heads as being ahead of their time. They were trendsetters in their time, absolutely. But they both were part of their time and I don't think could have come out of another time.
Interesting thoughts though, and open to opinion, of course.
I don't have an example that I can think of, but it reminds me of a friend claiming that J. Geils Band were 'ahead of their time'...
...I think he was drunk.
(Not to take anything away from J. G. Band)
Totally agree. At first, no one quite knew what to make of them.
Ha. Do you realize that Devo started in the early 70's? And were pretty much weirder then than what they had become by the time of their first Major label LP?
None of these were "ahead of their time".(jmo)
While I don't think of them as ahead of their time, I think the Doors are kind of timeless.
Yes, and like I say they were trendsetters.
I guess this could depend on your or my definition of "ahead of their time." To me it means a band that existed way before their time and maybe weren't recognized because of that. But maybe you mean a band that came along and led the way? Devo was that, and so were the Talking Heads. To me they came along at the right time.
