My wife is like that...great with boundaries. Of course, we had horses, including stallions for a while, and if you don't understand boundaries with those suckers, they kill you, LITERALLY !!
Her secret though, is that she really genuinely 100% does not give a **** if they like her or loathe her. She prefers to be loathed and avoided. So, she sets strict boundaries and they love her for it. Like flies on a dung pile. She is actually great with them, crates fun games and diversions, but always on her terms, and kids love her.

At my last house, my dog used to sit and watch the bouncy squirrels hop around the yard. I think she thought they were cute lol. There were several that would frequent the yard, I saw five of em out there once...with my dog out too! They didn't seem to bother each other at all. Sometimes, one would get quite close but still out of her reach and they'd sit and stare at each other haha. I don't know what she might have done if one got close enough but she seemed to like them.

She doesn't like actual squirrels though. I think she might take one out of it got close enough. She'll bark them out of the yard but she was just fine with the rabbits hanging around.
