Picked up one of those cheap Gibson SG specials on Friday to use as a "beater" that I can leave at band practice, sit by my chair in the living room... I traded a PRS SE in on it (plus my 15% coupon). I hate to say it, but I do like this guitar (main gigging guitar is a 92 SG standard, and have a 67 special reissue with P90's). I actually like the "baked maple" fingerboard. The guitar is highly resonant, the notes are clear and balanced throughout... The finish on back of the neck is different, but I'm getting used to it- Gibsons usally have a glossy, slippery back of the neck, this is a satin that you can feel the wood. I'm a cherry color guy, but this one is walnut- with the wood grain, it looks exotic. So far I'm really liking this.

Awesome! Let's see some pics! My main guitar is a Les Paul Special so I'm into the less expensive gibsons too.

I have never been a fan of maple topped guitars. I like Jr.'s and Specials. And, my favorite PRSi, is a Starla. Thin mahogany guitars, just seem more resonant.

that sg looks sweet- I have a reissue (without vibrola) that I get a great Sabbath vibe from.
I agree about the solid mahogany, I have a PRS Mira that I love also.

Beautiful, especially love the special. What year is it?

I have an older sg junior reissue (large pickguard) I added a short vibrola and man that thing just cooks.

I recently picked up a used LP Studio with a repaired head stock break and it's my favorite guitar.

'59, and '62. The junior is a refin, and the sg had a heel crack when I got it. Paid under a grand (combined) for the two because of their fixer uper condition.

I had a white Flying V from 2007. Great guitar in every way. I paid $800 used but it was "as new." I sold it to get a Les paul.

Ask and you shall receive. Not the best pic but it is the only one I have uploaded at the moment.

I'm a HUGE believer in "cheap Gibsons." Some great ones in this thread.

Got two Juniors, one Vintage Burst w/ a Stephens Design P-90, one Vintage White w/ a Duncan Antiquity h'bucker.

Got two Studios, one Worn Cherry Faded w/ a pair of Antiquities, one Gold Top 60s Tribute w/ stock Gibson P-90s.

    What more do I need?:rotflmao

A Melody Maker just like that is the first vintage electric I ever played. That was when I knew something different was happening with older guitars. Very responsive.
