The '54 les paul custom RI has been my dream guitar for well over a decade now but stupid hard to find and I've not found 'the' one to drop cash on yet.

But I was just wondering; when they were originally made in the 50s, did the first models have bridge+stopbar or did the earliest have wraptails?

PS. Show off what you have, make me jealous :p

From what I have read, they came out in late '53. The did not have the wrap around tailpiece.

here is my 2001 R4 BB Custom:

The '54 LPC is above all my dream guitar. That staple 90 is a dreamboat.

I had the reissue from around 98-99 or so. Loved the bloom of that neck pickup. At the time, I was without a good tech and didnt know to simply dress the nut to solve the tuning issues that were so bad I sold it on that basis alone.

Gibson reissued those in the late 70's with the "staple" P-90 in the neck.
A pal bought one new, and still loves it to death.

You could always get the Edwards copy and add the staple pickup.

You might have to work on that neck route, more wood is removed on a Gibson to accomodate the alnico 5, no sure about the Edwards.

I don't think the original customs ever had a wrap tail, but I've seen some reissues that do, and they look fantastic (I am a huge fan of wrap tails)

There was a limited reissue called an R5 I think, it was a Custom, P90 + an Alnico 5 that had a wrap, very cool! None of the originals came that way. ABR's fm the 1st.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I'd only ever seen a couple and thought they were super sexy.

Great looking guitars, those. They were also reissued in the early 1970s along with the wraptail goldtop 54- although they wrongly called the goldtop a 58 RI at the time, I believe.

Here's my 2009 R4 VOS with added vibramate. You should get one. You'll never regret it.

Here's mine. Stock Bigsby. Love it. I've had it for almost fifteen years and I can't get enough. They are hard to find and terribly expensive... But so far basically the best guitar I've ever had.

I've seen two or three come up on eBay and they're sooooooooo sexy....

Love my Customs, the R4 is a slim 8.35lbs of tonal bliss but I've been playing the hell out of the R7 for some time now and I prefer the aged binding as well.
