    HI
in need of a new preamp. My current one is acting up on one channel. I have a Bryston 4b (~early 80s vintage I think), KEF LS50s and a HSU powered subwoofer. Digital and analog sources. Budget is under 300. Used is fine/preferred, but some of the new stuff intrigues me too. I listen to pretty much everything but not much classical. Advice/opinions appreciated and welcome

    thx

I don't know much out there of commensurate quality with your KEFs for that kind of money. Look for a used Bryston 11b or an Adcom 565.

    Good luck!

yeah, another plug for the adcom gfp 565, i’ve had one in and out of my system for about 20 years. hard to criticize, it’s just neutral, with a really good phono section, and purist direct outputs.
edit: i just remembered that i had a gfp555 for awhile, noticeably lower sound quality. the 565 is the one.

Why not get it fixed or just looking to try something new?

If you can find one, a used Aragon 18K Mk II would be a nice fit in your system.

I've never listened to one of those, but if it is anything like my 24k it would be great.

Yes I am considering that. Its a Perreaux SM2 from the 80s, bought used. Its worth a few hundred I guess.

The Mk II version has the Penny & Giles volume potentiometer and is the one to get. They all come with the IPS, separate power supply. In my experience, it was 2nd (only slightly), only to the Aurum in the Mondial preamp line-up. Dan D'Agostino had a hand in designing these.

Fixing it would cost about as much to have someone fix as a new one would cost, so it's a wash. Something that old its probably just the electrolytic capacitors going out. Had a similar age reciver with a channel going out, replaced all the caps and it was good as new.

If you decide to not fix it I might be interested in it.

Grab a classic vintage Audio Research SP6B or SP8.

You may be able to locate a Bryston on ebay or audiogon.

Doug, your heart's in the right place but his budget doesn't allow.
I was initially going to recommend a c-j PV-5 til I saw what they were going for.
