Just got this e-mail. I will shamelessly admit that I am a huge fan of John Mayer's music and guitar playing :). Premier Guitar does a 10 minute interview with Rene Martinez on JM's current touring rig. Nothing necessarily unusual but for those who want cold-hard facts, here it is! Not intending for this to be a bashing thread...so for those that don't like him as much, keep it to yourself, please.

I find it really interesting that they mic his cabs with Beyer M88s. Seems really unconventional since they're known to be good kick mics. But I guess that comes to show you need to use your ears and not words to find the best sound.

I don't get him at all. I've only heard a few things so it's a limited sample size but everything I've heard has been as bland and boring as imaginable. His rig is cool but nothing particularly interesting or unique...it looks lime a gear page shopping list.

Nothing unique?? How about one of a handful of Dumble 100 Watt Steel String Singers and a Dumble modded Bandmaster.

Wow, some amazing insights from that guitar tech there.

"Tone control, or 'EQ,' as they sometimes call it . . ."

"These are open-backed cabinets, which means they're open in the back . . ."

I think Rene Martinez was dumbing it up for the Premier Guitar girl. He's is very knowledgeable and an extremely nice guy. Check out his website: texasguitarwiz.com

My favorite is the "huh? Uh yeah that's a REC wah." Cool vid though. That would be so fun to have that much GAS money.

I really like John Mayer's sound. Not all of his songs are the best ever but he is putting together a pretty impressive career IMO. At first I really tried to not like him 'cause he was so darn pretty. But he won me over, cause he can really play and I am always impressed with his tone and his little pop voice kind of rules too.

don't want to repeat myself. . . .but that girl knows her gear. . . .

funny thing about that thread. . . maybe b/c it was a differnt' lounge. . .

no one noticed. . .

THREE [email protected]!

bugger.

let alone 40 guitars. . .

jeebus.

cash flow is good in mayerland.

i was showing it to my girl. . . . i'm saying, "see that amp? forget that it's john mayer's. . . .that would sell for 30-50k. . .

. . . see that 'john mayer' amp?. . . another 5k

. . . and that bandmaster?. . . yeah. . . cousin mark has one. 3-4 hundred bucks"

(OKAY! I KNOW KNOW KNOW renee worked on it!. . . still!!!!)

I was watching with my wife - Yeah here are his 4 or 5 uber expensive amps - that one there is worth more than my life.

She's like :knitting

Here's his 40 guitars - she's like "WHAT? So, one for every song?"

He doesn't play 40 song sets...

"So, one for every song he wrote?":rotflmao

And yeah - the tech guy I'm sure is a lot smarter than he presented on the vid. He seemed to be dumbing it down on purpose, and really it doesn't matter that he doesn't know the name of the wah - he knows what it does and how to dial it in for Mr. Mayer.

But John Mayer has a ton of kick-butt gear and that was cool to see.

oh. . . .. the tech guy is like THE tech guy. martinez? he's pretty much amongst the highest in the cool dues department. . . . which is why i got such a kick out of those five seconds. . . .

and. . . just to be proper. . . and anal. . . or even bored ;)it would be mr. martinez. . . and just john. not that anyone is calling anyone mister over there. . . but if they were in my da's house. . . that's how it would go down for sure. . . . and NOT because of age. . .

renee has had m*therf*cker status since before john was born. . . sorta. . .:BluesBros

What a great video!

Like him or not. It's always nice to see the rig of a pro.

My wife looks at this and says, 'hey, you have that pedal, and that guitar'.

But in the end we won't have all that gear nor will we have the tone that we seek on a daily basis.

I am very happy with my John Mayer strat, or my CS Teles into my Klon straight into my Blues Jr.

That's my tone. And I love it!

But I always appreciate seeing a rig like that. Be it as simple as one pedal or as complicated as a rack like that.

If John likes all the stuff to get his tone, so be it.

I like my tone with my guitar-> Klon-> Blues Jr. And thats where I'm at.

I don't strive to find a Dumble or a huge rig to get the tones of the big boys, I am happy with what I have now on what my budget can afford!

Oh, he'll yeah, if I had a million bucks I'd be trying it all out. But for me, my tone kicks ass for where I am at!

So hey John Mayer, when you read this, Kudos to being where you are and enjoy the tone. Cuz I enjoy mine!!!!!!!

And if JM ever wanted to come to our weekly Family jams, I'm sure he would appreciate the gear we let him play through!

Rock on brothers!

am i the only one that thinks it's silly for a guy playing 16 songs a night to tour with 40 guitars? I mean I get it. He's a guitarist and a gear nut, but how many strats do you need to drag out on tour? Don't get me wrong If I had his kinda money I'd have twice as many guitars in my mansion, but taking that many on tour seems to be a bit of over kill.

You are not alone...I would also add that it is also logistically difficult and phenomenally expensive to tour with all of that gear as well.
