RIP Prince. Re-listened to a lot of his stuff since I heard of his passing... man WHAT a lead tone!

What pedals should I get to get that tone? Specifically OD

All I've heard is that he greatly favored Boss pedals. Can't tell you any specifics.

He was a great talent to be sure. He will be missed.

That is absolutely the most amazing Boss board I've ever seen!

Hmmm, so he uses the BD-2 and DS-2. Interesting.

I always heard a sort of "spongy" mid range in his tone that I hear in EMG pickups. Difficult to describe.

He was a complete and utter badass w/ a guitar. Most people on here have probably seen this, but if not, check it out - and - if you just want proof that Prince could wail on a guitar skip to about 3:25

Oh, yeah, and he had a sweet old Tele!

boss tone 100%. his guitar tones are some of the least tgp in the world.

his guitar sounds like its ripping through the speaker w a ds1 in one hand a metalzone in the other.
perfect example of dont even bother trying to recreate it using the tools, his playing is 99% execution.

    I'd not seen this before.

I didn't need proof because I know he can play, but seeing this cinches the deal. Not only is he killing it, there is TASTE all over the place. There's both this amazing amount of flash and restraint at the same time!!!!

When he leans back and someone holds him up and he keeps on playing. Master.

You know, I wish there were some videos of him out there just letting loose or jamming. I feel like his playing is always expert, but "constrained" to fit the structure of the song (which is a skill in itself). But I'd love to see him just cut loose. I hear shades of about 50 other players in his playing, and I bet he could have played them all.

    What a loss.

The part that blew my mind the first time watching that was the run he does down the fretboard popping harmonics off while doing a ton of stuff around them. Just virtuoso-level stuff, but like you said, always measured and musical at the same time.

Prince was a BADA$$ guitarist. Even with his non-boutique BOSS pedalboard. EMG pickups, BOSS pedlulz, and those funny white geetarz.

He should have gotten a Dumble and a '66 blonde Tele, with a Klon :D:D

Many guys here will sure find a way to get almost the same sound with various boutique offerings saying Boos isn't good enough for the bedroom, thrice the price of course, at least... and true bypass.

    Sorry for the rant.

RIP Prince, 2016 is a sad year indeed.

I'd never seen that either - That was just awesome. I knew he could play and always have to look his persona, especially from the purple rain days.

Use whatever effects you like. The secret is to leave the whole board out in the purple rain for an hour.

When I watch a guy like Prince play and listen to his incredible tone and then see what he uses, it makes me take a step back and reflect on my views on gear. Prince's tone during the, "while my guitar gently weeps" solo is just amazing and he is most likely using a boss overdrive pedal and a standard/pcb amp. I need to get out of this hardwired/boutique obsession and just play!

Interesting that he had a VB-2 on his board.

Does anyone know if he actually used it, and if so, where?
