So the crappy Madonna show had me thinking about how cool the Prince halftime show was a few years ago and I just wondered if anyone knew what gear Prince was using, particularly during the Foo's cover? I'm not a blues/RnB player at ALL but I just love his tone during that song.

No question about that being live. He is pretty great in so many ways.

Probably one of the best half time shows ever!! Prince is a killer player...and no fake singing there!! Thing I don't understand, how doesn't he have a Fender Signature or something.

Prince is 10 feet of badass stuffed into a 5 foot package.

Check this out from one of the Superbowl week events press concerts: (you can see him tweeking his pedalboard here)

VH-1 awards show from 2005. Typical cheezy awards show version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" until Prince comes in at 3:25 or so and blows everyone away. You know you're a bad MF'er when you can throw your guitar straight up into the air and there's an invisible person to catch it while you do the "George Jefferson" strut off the stage....:)

i was at this super bowl and was really excited for prince despite being completely soaked due to the rain. unfortunately the sound inside the stadium was just atrocious. it was almost difficult to make out any vocals. so disappointing when i got to see the video after the fact and see just how kick ass of a performance it was.

Agreed! Prince is a ridiculous guitar player, who's under-appreciated in my opinion. That solo from the VH1 special in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is one of my absolute favorites!

    great tone indeed.

and a reminder that he's playing on a floyd'd guitar. hmm seems to go against the common conception here (and on other guitar forums) that floyds suck tone.

That is the definition of a 'face melting' guitar solo

His current strats (Orange, Blue, Purple, and a Red one) were all Fender Custom Shop, but Mike Eldred said Prince will not allow mass production.'

Anyway, Prince has a tendency to keep his rig secret. Most of what is in known about his rig for any given period is just based on observation or what old techs have said.

Having said that, his rig was most likely a Boss Turbo Distortion through a MEsa Lonestar. That's supposedly been his setup lately.

His main guitars are Fender Strats now.

Seems like I heard he used a Rivera Fandango that night.

Prince has been a longtime Boogie user. Befor the Lonestar he was using a Heartbreaker head into a 2x12 Recto cab with the same Boss pedals he's using with the Lonestar. He really makes that rig sound great.

Don't forget the other alleged tone suckers, the EMGs he has on all of his Strats! :D

Don't let that get out - people around here might actually start believing tone comes from the hands of the player!
