I believe the guy at the left in the back row went on to become the dance/techno act Moby. EDIT- IT'S NOT MOBY per posts further in thread.
Spent two weeks in a van with these guys last fall, amazing band still today.
for newer punk a recent favorite of mine is Ancient Shapes
their self titled album is amazing 10 awesome tunes in under 17 minutes
the LP is so short they put the whole album on the A side and on the B side
Meat puppets crashed one night at a house I was living in back in the 80s on their way to/from New York. One of the brothers had a notebook that he was constantly doodling in while we were hanging out. When I bought a copy of their next album, I opened it and found that there was a hand drawn doodle ripped from a notebook inside the album sleeve. Not sure if it was from the same notebook I saw him drawing in (the band apparently hand inserted a drawing into each album until they ran out of drawings). Things like this was one of the things that made punk great.
That’s Steve DePace, original and current drummer for Flipper.
Moby has been saying for years that he played in Flipper. Wasn’t so...
Until 2005 or 6, Flipper was doing a show in NYC and he jumped onstage to jam on one song, prob Sex Bomb. After the song he kept playing, so I grabbed my bass back and kicked his ass off the stage.
Aside from his own personal anecdote that he sang for the band for two days because Will Shatter was incarcerated, there isn't any evidence Moby ever fronted Flipper. For their part the band denies it.
Indeed. That sure isn't Moby in that photo.
Nice. A wrong has been wrighted...and here on TGP of all places. Great story and debunkment- thanks!
Flipper is great for many reasons, one of which is that the 10 minute or so live recording of Sex Bomb is the punk equivalent of In a Gadda da Vida. If you ever hear either played on the radio, the DJ is on a bathroom break. Saved me between 12-6AM a bunch of times.
Actually saw Flipper once in an abandoned warehouse. Complete bedlam- constant barrage of stuff being thrown at the stage, from the stage, inside the crowd...at one point people carried a sink they had ripped off a bathroom wall out into the middle of the crowd and smashed it on the floor. They don't make shows like that anymore.
That's a photo of the Vatican Commandos when Moby was in the band. He's wearing the Mickey Mouse shirt.
Love John McGeoch!
This weird Yardbirds cover left a lasting impression on me - especially the frantic guitar interplay by the Hertzberg brothers
