Hey man Happy New Year!!
Imo, top guys in the South Bay-
Keith Holland
Marks Guitars

Ya know, I have tried all of the guys around here. Some of them are friends and/or aquaintances.

For any work anymore, I take my fiddles up to the city to Gary Brawer.

Stay far away from Real guitars, Gary does really terrible work nowadays, hit SF guitarworks instead. At least you will get good service, won't get ripped off and they will do what you asked without a lot of runaround. I actually had them work on two guitars which took over 2 months and they put the wrong frets on one of my les pauls. LAME...

After several trips to Brawer, I am looking to try someone else. I guess if you are a rock star you might get better service. It's a damn shame.

Wow, I have been taking my guitars to Gary/Real for a no. of years now. Yes they can take a bit of time, but the longest I had a fiddle out was 2 months for a broken headstock on my Zemaitis copy, SS frets and a Plek job. The work was second to none. My fretwork may take up to 1 month, but I plan accordingly. I do have to call to find out what is up. I keep thinking, "go somewhere else, but where??" Best fretwork in the Bay Area imo. Best quality repair of catastrophic failures that I have ever seen.

My experience was so bad that they actually let me have both my guitars back for free cause they screwed up so bad. Like more than 700 dollars, because Gary knew he messed up and didn't want to buy my guitars from me. So I had to take them to SF guitarworks which is a way better shop, they actually listen to you. The shop "managers" at Gary's shop are so full of it, and the funny thing is they love to name throw "metallica this, satriani that" just to convince people to waste their time and money there.

My brother lives in Berkeley and has an old Charvel that really needs a refret. He is new to that area, so if one of these place recommedations is near Berkeley, please let me know so I can tell him. thanks!

Unfortunate about Brawer!

Problem-Once I got my guitars Plek'ed, the other top names around could not compete.

And no, I do not consider Torres one of them. I have not used his shop since the Big Basin days. I actually stopped going there when Keith left. I take that back, I went back once and it was a fiasco.

Two of my trips to Brawer resulted in immediate bounce-backs. The work was just not done right. I fully believe that they *can* do a good job. I'd love to have them do a good job for me. Not sure how to make that happen.

Hey Chaz, I know a guy who worked for Taylor guitars who now works for one of the nicer luthier shops, pm and i can get you his info. He does refrets for half price.
