Eat The Rich by Motorhead qualifies:

St. Elmo's Fire is not that great a fit since the lyrics are about Rick Hansen and have nothing to do with the film.

What does the line “Take me where my future’s lying, St Elmo’s Fire” have to do with Rick Hansen?

So they wrote the song for the movie and used the term "St Elmo's Fire" because that was the name of the movie.

I don't doubt that to the songwriter it is about Rick Hansen, but he's not referencing St Elmo's Fire there just because it's an apt metaphor (it's actually kind of strained). He's using it because that's the name of the movie he was hired to write the song for and for most of the audience, that's how it will be identified.

I got confused. I thought you were talking about documentaries that dealt with decades of movies, but now I realize you're talking about the docs that dealt with life in the US in general during those decades.

I'll see if there's room on the DVR amongst all my wife's ghost investigation shows...

I can see how my earlier post confused you. Unfortunately (from my perspective), their documentary series on The Movies is only covering the 80s forward.

Did anyone mention Wang Chung yet?

The song's nothing special, but it's a pretty cool movie.

I thought the Commodores - Night Shift was from the 80's movie of the same name but I was mistaken, it's this one.

I think the OP specifically mentioned that this isn't the kind of song he's looking for, as the film was named after the then years old track.
