R7 incoming so BB1 & 2 vs Fralin Pure PAF?

hey all, ive got an R7 goldtop incoming and was curious about why there seems to be a bit of hate around about the burstbuckers? I don't think they sound that bad in the clips ive heard. Ive played an R7 with 57 classics and didn't love them and ive got a set of Fralin Pure PAFs waiting to go into the lester. But all in all what ive heard of the burstbuckers seemed OK.

Thoughts?

For some people, they just don't fit in with what they trying to do but I think a lot of the hate on forums is because they're made by Gibson and not some dude in a shop in his garage. Yeah, yeah... typical internet response, I know. But I've used them in a LP and like them.

I found them underwhelming in my own R7 -- not bad, mind you, just not as good as pretty much any of the boutique PAFs that I've tried (Wolfetone, WCR, Bare Knuckle).

I had an R8 and an R7. They sounded fantastic in the R7, but not as good in the R8. Consequently, I'm not big on Internet generalizations. I would test them out for a long period of time.

I would also give them a good long listen. And don't forget to adjust the height. The magic tone recipe might be in there just waiting to be discovered.

Had a 3 in a lp, liked it a lot after I adjusted some of the poles, can't remember exactly what I did, but never looked back. I do have 57 classics in a lp I just bought and they are nice as well. If I had to choose, I'de pick the 57's. Thought the bb3 was more vintage sounding. It was also not waxed or potted.

I think most things are an improvement over the 490 and 498 pickups they use. The 57 classics are meh at best. I would drop the fralins you mentioned in.

If it sounds good, then it is good. That said, the woods will determine what sounds good as every guitar is a bit different.

So I got the Fralins put in. They are pure PAF with a 5% overwind. Neck reads at 7.8ish and bridge at 8.3ish. They sound great btw much fuller and transparent than the BB1 or 2 FWIW. Great chime and definition.

I have the Pure PAFs in my Les Paul Custom, too. They're my favorite PAF clones. Congrats.

Generally speaking the BB1 and BB2 are a lower wind brighter general sound. As are the new Custombuckers beginning on the 2013 models IMO. I like 'em both a lot compared to BB Pros and 57's in a Les Paul.
