How well does it work? Can you use it withou speakers?
You cannot use it without a load on the amp.
There is a guy over at Music Toyz that uses one live and says it works very well.
The poor man's version:
I've used an Ultra G-100 on the line-out of some Marshall & Mesa heads in live situations -worked well. I've used it as the only guitar signal and mixed with mic signal. Speaker emulation is acceptable.
I have not tried it at speaker level.
It can be used as an active DI w/out the speaker emulation.
I have a JDX box and like it a lot. I've installed it inside the cabinet of my amp permanently. If I'm not using it, I don't hook up the power supply.
You do have to have the speaker hooked up at all times, as the box does not create a load on the amp.
I don't think there's a device out there that works the way this one does, and I'm very happy with the way it records.
I'm curious if you've ever connected it to a load box or attenuator and compared the sound to when it is connected to a speaker.
Nope ... never tried it.
According to their info, the JDX works off of the interaction of the speaker and the amp. As such, I can only imagine that it would indeed be different if you used a load box. Whether or not that is to be considered "better" is another issue.
Still looking for someone who has used on of these with a load box/attenuator. I am wondering if it could sound as good as a Palmer.
