Two of them are closing near me...which still leaves a store within 10 miles. LOL. Part of their problem, perhaps.

The one I go to in Scottsdale is escaping the axe this time. I wonder if the closing stores will have big clearance sales or just hand the inventory off to other stores.

I can't believe any are staying open, I know sometimes there are needs that can't wait but what they have that can't be found at other bricks for much less money is a really small market, can they really keep some stores open selling capacitors and resistors to the desperate?

Holy crap - They're closing the center island store in Union?

When I worked there that was one of the top stores in the state. Did a fair chunk of manager training in that store (as well as the Garwood store).

Meanwhile my local store seems to be staying, which is surprising.

On another note, think of the logistics of closing all those stores. Damn.

When I worked there (1984 or so) they bragged about this fact.

If the economy takes a dump, Starbucks will be doing the same thing.

Thankfully mine is not on that list. The one near me went private several years ago and the other ones in bigger towns don't carry parts. Mine still carries parts and tools. :beer

Huh? The economy did tank in a large way and Starbucks expanded.

I would think that the stores which survive are going to 'convert' into cellular-phone support centers, and not remain as a general Electronics store.

There are two closing in Gurnee, IL (a couple miles from here) that can't be more than a mile apart, if that far. However, there's another about 5 miles from here in the opposite direction that was spared.

They are closing every single one within 30 miles of me, not that I go there much anyway.

    Yep...both our stores are closing.
We have Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Costco, Apple Store, etc.
Should be fine...still, a sad thing for this iconic store, IMO.

Yes, they're partnering with Sprint I believe. On the business report I heard on the radio yesterday they were saying it be a "store within a store partnership scenario..." for whatever that's worth.

Sad, some of the stores in my area have been around since the 60's. I've never known them to not be there. One of them had a toy/hobby store next to it, and as a kid I loved hanging out in that Radio Shack just as much as I did the toy store. That was when you had the old guys in short sleeved dress shirts with pocket protectors working there who you could actually learn cool stuff from...they actually knew electronics.

Surprisingly the one right near my house is the newest store in my area and they're staying open. We're somewhat rural though...no Best Buy or much else around within about 15 - 20 miles in cluster-f traffic. Maybe that's what saved them.

I think it's still sad. All that floor space & all the jobs that will be lost.
    " Better " economy? Don't think so...

That's a boatload of stores :eeks I didn't see Kwakkleberry listed there anywhere. :red

That's ok, they didn't have much to do with electronics anymore. :bong

I have 8 of them within ten miles, I really had no idea there were that many around here. 4 of them are closing.

    And RS carried Tandy computers...

I don't know if Fry's Electronics is everywhere in the US. I only discovered it when moving to Phoenix. They seem to have everything RS has plus a lot more. The local one is at least as big as a Best Buy store. I don't know how RS can compete with them. I only go to RS because it's closer for me.
