Recommend a Firewire drive for PTLE on a Macbook Pro?

Hi All,

I needed a new audio interface for Snow Leopard as Line 6 are STILL not supporting it GRRRR! So I took the oportunity to go Pro Tools and bought a MBox 2 Pro Factory (should have waited til after NAMM???)

Now I need to buy a Firewire Drive to record on and it looks like a minefield! Digi recommend a specific chipset (Oxford) and the only drives I can find that say that they have this chipset are the Glyph (expensive) and OWC which are only available in the US from what I can see.

I have read a review of a previous generation Iomega UltraMax that says it has a Oxford chipset, but is Firewire 400 and I need 800 for my mac.

Am I reading too much into this ? or do I need to keep looking?

Anyone recommend an easy to get hold of drive in the UK?

Cheers

All you need to use to use firewire 400 to 800 is a conversion cable. Glyph would probably be the best choice, but here is a link to another HD company that will work with Digi. They also have the firewire 400 to 800 cable available through their website.

Hi,

thanks, yes I have the Firewire cables to convert 800 to 400 etc.

it's more trying to find the speciffic chipsets etc.

thanks for the link, but again it is a US website and I am in the UK.

LOL all the sites that specify the chipsets seem to be in the US, nightmare.

We just got a Glyph 500 - then it's got a letter like "Q" - it's FW 800 which I've got going into an iMac with FW800 only (why the person who bought it didn't get 400 and 800 is beyond me). That Glyph has an 800 and 400 on it, so I run the 400 down to a Digi 003, and then on to a second smaller Glyph that's at 400.

The Glyphs seem pretty secure to me, though on the (older) FW 400 I've had issues with it being recognized on some (newer) computers. In the current set up, it seems that power on order has a lot to do with it.

Too bad about OWC not shipping international...good stuff, service and price.

G-Tech is good but a few more quid...I see them everywhere I go in editing suites.

I personally have had very good luck with Hitachi drives.

Mini is nice for a notebook if you want to go bus powered...

the G drive you will note has Pro-Tools icons on the page...

They both have the Oxford 934 chip...if that is what you are looking for...

But they do have resellers in the UK and list specs.

So maybe worth a look for you.
