I heard several times the durham crazy horse is the one to go for the neil young tone...
peppermint fuzz is the one for sixties garage bands fuzzsound.

Peppermint dow not do that sound...more buzzy and thinnner...great...but not that. IMO you need two pedals...one "ragged" fuzz and one good Medium/Medium Rare gain OD. BYOC MKII ESV into (x), or, Analog Man Sun Face into (X). It is the cascade that gets that tone. Maybe a HAO Sole Pressure or Cmatmods "Buttah". The Durham cops that tone really close but I found it a bit too noisy for me...

hbe powerscreamer---3 position switch has a setting that sounds like amp implosion. nice gain available too!

I've owned a Crazy Horse and now have a Subdecay Flying Tomato. The flying Tomato doesn't get you there quite as well as the Crazy Horse, but it gets you damn close.

    thanx for the advice
now i am thinking about a colorsound overdriver clone ...

my choice right now would be the throbak overdrive booster
cause i have heard that the prescreption overdriver is like NY in a box
but i like the throbak more ...

i know that i am never going to nail the sound of an age old full cranked
tweed with a fender reverb unit in front going into some strange speakers ...
but i am satisfied in getting close ... besides the fact that i never will be
able to play like NY ... i just like the sound ;-)

The Overdriver can do Neil Young really well, but it needs to going into an amp that is already on the verge of breaking up. Then you crank the gain, volume and bass on the Overdriver, adjust the treble to get enough cut to keep it from being complete mush. I owned one for a while and needed to give it up in a trade, but I'm currently trying to get a replacement myself. Great pedal. I miss it dearly.
