If there are any two builders that are passionate about creating the ultimate tube amp they're John Thompson of Bad Cat and Henry Heistand of RedPlate. They recently met up at the L.A. Amp Show and found that they share similar passions and values and have admired one another's tone and innovations for some time now. John loved the tone and touch sensitivity every RedPLate he plugged into and was especially fond of the Tweedy Verb. Henry was blown away by the Unleash technology and has always felt that BadCat's proprietary handwound transformers, master volume and cut circuits are the best in the business.
So, after some lengthy conversations and amp builder geekery, they decided to join forces and build an amp with the best each had to offer. The result is the REDCAT. Up front it's all Tweedy Verb. But it will feature John Thompson's custom transformers, master volume and cut circuits, and a built in Unleash on the output stage.
I know what your thinking :worthless. So here's the mock up. [IMG][/IMG]

No BS here. If you go to http://www.badcatamps.com/about.html you'll see that John Thompson is not only an amp builder, but president of Bad Cat Holdings. He's an extremely nice guy with an unrestrained passion for tonal excellence. When I spoke with him last night he said he already did his part on the chassis and is sending it off to Henry in Arizona.

You are banned for the next two weeks. Furthermore, you're not allowed to touch, look at or think about a guitar during your time out.

James is an employee now. John bought/merged or something like that. I believe he owns the company that has always made badcats trannies. Inductor magnetics or something like that. Badcat has been going through some changes in the past couple of years. I'll be surprised if they can survive without better quality control.

By the way, I am no hater. I love those amps and have owned over 20 of them. My tech can confirm that, he has had to work on most of them ;-

I had one of those amps that you mention. It was a 2004 Trem Cat. Caps went bad and started eating power tubes within hours of putting a fresh set in. James sent me replacement caps and they were bad as well. I ended up paying for my own replacement caps and having to pay a tech to do the work... I ended up selling the amp. Good to hear that they got that worked out, too bad it was not worked out then.

Good to hear John. As I said I am a huge fan of the amps and have owned many of them. I played Badcats exclusively for 4 years. The tone is where it is at for me. The channel switching/bleeding issues and the lack of a transferable warantee were what turned me off. For that kind of money I would like to see more confidence in the product than 5 years to the original owner only. Especially for something built military spec.
