Refinishing a Fender MIM '72 Reissue Thinline Telecaster

Does anybody have any experience refinishing a MIM '72 Thinline? There is a spot on mine where the finish is coming off and I'm thinking about removing it all wth a heat gun and buying some nitro from ReRanch. My concerns are what sealer and/or grain filler I'll need and how to address the missing thickness of the existing poly after refinish is done. The poly coming off is like 1/10th" thick. I'd really appreciate any advice you might have if you've done a refinish on one of these. Thank you!!!

I wouldn't use a heat gun. These get red hot and might damage the wood. Use various grades of sandpaper starting with 80 or 100 grit than 200, 300, 400 etc.
