My old Maxtor 160 external HD is acting up and I'm ready to replace it before things get worse. A search for Hard Drive suggestions yielded mostly Mac related suggestions, and this is for a PC w/ Digi 003R/ PT LE. I assume firewire is the way to go...what about speed, etc.? Other considerations?

I'm interested also...I'd like only to save my pics and music.

If eSATA is an option, that would be faster than firewire. I would also recommend getting the drive and enclosure separately. I use an Icy Dock enclosure and a Samsung Spinpoint drive (7200 RPM).

As with the others, I can't recommend strongly enough that you go with the metal (NOT PLASTIC) external enclosure and plug a standard hard drive into it. Much better from a reliability and replacement standpoint.
