Absolutely-along with the Tony Williams Lifetime records with Holdsworth, Al DiMeola early solo records and Heavy Weather-some of my favorite fusion-prog rock music. That music takes the listener on a sonic journey.
Romantic Warrior is a true classic. Timeless. That and Mahavishnu Orchestra's Birds of Fire ('73) were the formative fusion releases for me from that era.
Oh yeah, got turned on to these guys when I was a kid in the 70s. I went to a drum clinic with Tony Williams in '81 (I think) because my guitar teacher suggested that I go. It blew me away and opened my ears to the drums as an instrument other than something that sets a beat.
RTF has some excellent material and playing from the pre-guitarist to the Bill Connors to the DiMeola era through the recent reunion years (which showed maturity by all involved). While perhaps not my fave 'fusion', they're iconic for good reason.
When I was 15 or 16...my music high school teacher made me a tape...Side 1...Mahavishnu Orchestra Birds of Fire Side 2...Return To Forever No Mystery...It blew my mind and along w/ John Coltrane Live in Seattle was in my car tape deck non stop...I always loved Al Dimeola's solo on the song No Mystery...still my favorite playing of his and one of my favorite tones of all time. I then got the album w/ Bill Connors and Romantic Warrior...great f-ing band
