What are your preferences ? Are new high gain pickups suitable for vintage chimey sound? My amp is set clean for 6-7 K single coils with Strats and new high gain pickups have 10-11 K output...won`t it destroy my setting?

I have twin 360/12's one w/T-Tops and one hi gain. IMO, the hi gain pickups are more versatile and still do vintage extremely well.

even around 10k, the high-gains in my Ric 330 are lower output than the 8k pickups in my Tele. DC resistance isn't a perfect indicator.

While I tend to prefer lower output pickups, I have really liked all of the Rickenbackers with high gain pickups that I've played. The local GC had one recently that sounded fantastic. It had all the chime and clarity that you could ever ask for. I would have bought it if I had the cash.

i love rolling back the tone on my 620 w/hi-gains for a round, clear blues sound. the tone knobs and the mixer-knob really make the hi-gains super versatile without giving up the vintage Ric tones.

The older toasters sound really good clean and distorted

Very helpfull Kingblud ....both seems usefull with good high - range.....High gains are fuller and bassier...i think everything depends on the amplifier....Vox seems to be naturally suited for Rickenbacker.I use Hiwatt or KR-12 - both are fat sounding amps , KR-12 is even fatter sounding so Toasters could suit my style better. How to find toaster pickups?

A lot of people prefer their 6-string Rickenbackers to have Hi-Gains and their 12-string models to have Toasters. Toasters are more vintage correct to a degree, but those old 60s pickups were wound all over the place. I don't think you can go wrong with either, although I personally find the Toasters too thin sounding.

You can buy Toasters right from Rickenbacker when they are in stock at their Boutique. They come and go.

I have one of each:

Toasters are great, but high gains are far more versatile and I prefer them. "High" is a bit of a misnomer here. Like others have noted, Ric high gains aren't what you'd typically describe as a high output PUP.

Those are beautiful! Is the finish on those "Antique Fireglo" ?

My Rick 330-12 had Hi-Gains and I took 'em off and put a new set of toasters on there. Why? I think they're "airier' sounding than Hi-Gains, and I like the way they look. It's just that classic 60's vibe, and that guitar is meant to chime. I use a Janglebox and a very clean setting. The sound is McGuinn personified. I love it.

On the other hand, I had a recent 360-6 with Hi-Gains and I left that one alone. It was actually a very good hard rock guitar, believe it or not. Those pickups crunched really well.

I like the toasters in the 12 strings and the high gains in the six strings. I changed my 330/6 from high gains to toasters and regretted it. The high gains have a cool crunch to them.

Put me in the camp that likes toasters on 12's and high gains on the 6's. My '67 360/12 has toasters of course....the bridge has the long poles and sounds amazing.

I just picked up a new 660 equipped with the toasters which are standard for. That model. I'm running the signal thru a swart atomic boost and a diamond halo chorus then into a swart AST Pro. It's an amazing thing. I'm loving the Ric more each time I pick it up. I have a tele q guild bluebird with p-90 a yamaha sa-2000 and the rickenbacker is in an obvious class of it's own. I will definitely buy more Rics when I run across deals.

I liked the hi-gains, until I got a Ric with toasters. Wound up selling 3 Rics and buying versions with toasters. It was day and night for me, the toasters were so much clearer and livelier. I'll never own a hi-gain again, love the toasters...and the broilers too.
