I was 10-11 when The Gambler and his Greatest Hits were at their peaks. I don't remember if I started listening to them first or my parents, but I had both those albums and listened to them to death. In October I would discover ACDC and my musical interests took a different path but I still listen to Kenny Rogers every once in awhile. It's like an instant teleportal to being a 10-11yo kid in 1980. RIP Kenny Rogers

You gotta know when to hold ‘em
    Know when to fold ‘em
    Know when to walk away
    Know when to run....

I like to think Kenny didn’t fold.... he just got up from the table and walked out of the building with a big smile taking his cards with him.

He cashed in his chips, before heading to the next card game...

I was raised on 70's country and I loved Kenny's songs. He was a Houston boy so we always took extra pride in his success.

    What a voice.

    RIP, Kenny.

I usually cite Elvis Presley as the last big hitmaking star to do other people's compositions (almost) exclusively but I often forget about KR who obviously made a mint after EP was gone. I intentionally omit disposable autotune popettes eg Rihanna.

In some interviews KR does suggest that he had a grand plan but to get that big for that long there has to be some luck and circumstance eg his telling of the story of recording 'Islands In The Stream.' He'd sung it over and over and told the producer he was growing to hate the tune. Dolly Parton happened to be in the same studio building the same day and you know the rest.

Now that I'm a hacktastic amateur recording engineer & producer myself I often search for articles on particular artists or songs or albums, usually in Sound On Sound Magazine.

I detect a lot of close-micing on KR records which allowed him to almost whisper and still make it sound good on tape. Similar technique used with Karen Carpenter.

Thank you Billy. Dolly always struck me as a classy woman. She always seems so genuine.

Thanks for the tunes, Gambler. RIP. Also thanks for helping to inspire a favorite Seinfeld episode. Cheers.
