I heard that Ralph Sharon, the great pianist who often accompanied Tony Bennett passed away this week. I realize TGP doesn't often discuss Tony Bennett but many of his great more recent albums featured Sharon's tremendous playing. Never flashy but always creative and spot-on interpretations of the great American standards. Great tone, rhythm, humor, counterpoint - you name it. It takes real musical knowledge to properly accent a great vocalist.

    RIP Ralph.

Sharon had been involved with Tony for 50 years or more. It was Ralph's idea for Tony to record "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."

    RIP indeed.

Musicians of his stature should be discussed more often
    on TGP.

    RIP Ralph

My Uncle Torrie was Tony's Musical Director in the 70's, 80's

You're right about it taking talent to be good accompanist... it is not an easy thing to do and is not talked about compared to most other musical talents and abilities, but should be. Ralph was one of the best.
