This should dispel all the RF is not a real bluesplayer BS.

Also, nice to mix it up with all the VH and JM threads in here.

Robben has some of the best rhythm and time feel of any guitarist I have heard. Note how he changes the feel thoughout.

    Enjoy...

Amen to that. I LOVE his lines, tone and all, but it's his mastery of comping and rhythm that makes him the amazing musician he is. IMO. :)

Also nice to hear him on the front pickup in this context.

Love his playing on the Live withJimmy Witherspoon album. He was about 7 when that was recorded. You can hear people screaming on the recording cause Robben is so burnin'.

What? I didn't know there were people who said he wasn't a real blues player.

Dude has "pocket" for days. I realize some can take or leave his singing, but how can you not respect him as a guitar player is something I don't get...

Also, from what I can gather, it appears that he's mostly a self-taught guy. I've heard him mention some books he's studied, but not much else. Obviously, his time logged as a sideman allowed him to glean a lot, but I don't hear too much about any formal training. Anyone know for sure?

I've also noticed that when he plays the Tele, he tends to keep it clean for the most part. Even when playing through the Dumble, I don't ever hear him go for the boost like he does with the humbuckers. I wonder why? Is it the Bloomfield influence?

Regardless of how he gets categorized, he's still a great guitar player...

Who ever said RF is not a bluesman at heart?

Of course, if he was a real bluesman, he would be wearing tan pants and some type of brim.

    ;)

His first solo record was on sax , not guitar. I guess that's a clue about his training.

Robben is a master who has been honing his craft for over 40 years. I would consider Robben to be more of a Jazz musician who 'fuses' Blues, Rock, and Funk. Taste is subjective. I happen to be a huge fan. YMMV...

On one of the youtube vids I've watched of RF he mentions that he's a self taught player. He says everything he knows about chords came from the Mickey Baker book. I remember spending some time with that book in the '70s but I sure didn't gain the same level of mastery that he has.

I'm another that doesn't care whatsoever if he's a real blues guy. I just really like to listen to him play.

Saw him with the Yellowjackets last Friday, was a treat to see him in a "Fusion" setting... he also played "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin'" and "Imperial Strut" it was a treat to hear him play it Live. I've dreamed of seeing the him play with them, it was just spectacular. This was the version from 1980, some 32 years ago!

    Hey, I was there!

Was glad to see Jimmy Haslip play with them before he takes his hiatus..

Awesome venue, the Lobero. First time I'd been there.
