Name some songs that are just dying to be played a bit faster, more distortion, and with some punk rock flair. I know it's been done a hundred times before by other bands, but I'm looking to write a fun set list to play with some old friends and minimal practice.

Tainted Love comes up well A teen punk band did it a few years ago, can't recall their name, but we did a version like that in my brief band days.
Something like Fire and Rain would take some added angst well.

10cc : I'm not in love ... When I hear this song I envision it in an almost upbeat Ska style with a taste of distortion.

I like Queen's cover of Queen's We will rock you (the opening song on Live Killers). That kicks ass.

The Hollies' Long Cool Woman...I could see Foo Fighters killing it, in a good way.

I was in a band that did a punk version of "Mother."
Pink Floyd meets the Sex Pistols kind of sound.

Sonny and Cher's "the beat goes on" has this cool groove that can devolve into something evil the first time you play it.

I always wanted to do a Social Distortion/NOFX type cover of Willie Nelson's "Nothing I Can Do About It Now," that or Skeeter Davis's "The end of the world."

This band seems to be Chris Shiflett's (Foo Fighters) "other band". I only know about this CD but the Wiki entry reveals a veritable treasure trove of kitsch.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_First_and_the_Gimme_Gimmes_discography

Anyway, this live recording, from 2004, has credible punk rawk covers of unusual stuff like:

    Stairway to Heaven
    Heart of Glass (Blondie)
    Delta Dawn (Tanya Tucker)
    Come Sail Away (Styx)
    O Sole Mio
    Strawberry fields Forever
    Auld Lang Syne
    The Longest Time (Billy Joel)
    On My Mind (Willie N/Elvis)
Take It On The Run (REO Speedwagon)
    Superstar
    Hava Nagila
    Seasons in the Sun
    Sloop John B.

    How's them apples?

We do a version similar to this except electric w/ a drums and bass. (Sorry no recording of it yet...) Crowds really seem to like it.
