Bear with me here as this is my first tube amp. I am looking to replace the tubes on my Bassman clone. Currently it has an EH12AT7 in the first position and two Sovtek 12AX7s in positions 2 and 3. The power tubes are two Fender Groove Tube Code Reds 6L6s.

Any brand recommendations to replace the tubes? I am hoping to have the amp break up a little earlier. Also can I replace the tubes myself or do I have to adjust the bias (still a little unfamiliar with how this works). Just don't want to mess anything up.

    Thanks for the help!

A 12AX7 in the first position would be the first step toward earlier breakup. You can do it yourself.

For inexpensive tubes, the Tung Sol Reissue 12AX7s are quite good.

Ditto on the "12AX7 in V1" comment for earlier breakup.

You only have to rebias for new power tubes (6l6s in this case).

    Slightly off topic:
What do you recommend for more headroom & later break-up in a '63 bassman. Currently using Tung-sol 12AX7'3 and NOS JAN 6L6's

I love using a NOS GE 5751 with the green label in V1 along with 2 Mullards and Jan 6L6's. Great results. 59 bassman RI

    6L6 what? (What suffix?)

The suffix has EVERYTHING to do with power handling and, hence, headroom.

If they're WGBs, GCs will increase headroom.

A 5751 in V1 will help. JAN GEs seem to do well for everyone.

So the Mullards are 12AX7s? and the 5751 can be used to replace the 12AT7? Are all these preamp tubes interchangable without having to adjust anything?

They're Jan Phillips 6L6WGB. Are you saying GC'c will increase headroom? If so, what kind do you recommend?

GCs are 30 watt tubes, WGBs are 23 watt tubes. Yes, GCs have higher headroom. Will it be enough? Only way to know is to try them.

RCA Blackplates are excellent but expensive. Other NOS would be fine but I have no matched pairs in stock. In new production, Groove Tubes 6L6GEs are excellent. SED 6L6GCs are good.

Get rid of the Sovteks especially if you can read 12ax7wa under the Fender printing. These tubes are reliable but tonally they are just killing your amp, try the Tungsols. Personally, I like the Shugnangs if you want a little more gain and a smoother tone, the Tungsols will be a bit brighter then the Shugnangs.

+1 I'm very happy with the RI Tung Sol. The EH 12ax7 is good so is the Tung Sol 12ax7. They both come out of the same factory but they sound different. Get a balanced triode for V1 for maximum benefit.

"They're Jan Phillips 6L6WGB" That's what mine are. Sorry the Mullards are the ECC83's ....same thing. I also run a Mullard Philips MiniWatt GZ34 and I love this setup the best. If you mess with the power tubes you will have to change the bias. But I switch those 12ax7 like light bulbs too see which works better...lol. Hands down I kept coming back to the NOS green GE 5751. Great tube.
