Ron Thorn and my girlfriend Rowan have had a secret relationship for about four months, I recently found out. Rowan can be very conspiratorial and duplicitous. Secretive too - it's a gift.

Let me explain: My 50th Bday was Aug 10th. I had two parties – one in LA organized by Mark Robinson at Mark’s house on Aug 5th, and a 2nd party at Kim Gimbal’s in Chico, organized by Paige Gimbal and Rowan on Aug 12th.

At the 2nd party on Aug 12th I was given a poster sized Bday card – 24”x36”. It was a picture of ME playing Ron Thorn’s personal guitar - #37. I love that guitar. The Thorn guitar had been ‘photoshopped’ in, replacing the Strat in the original picture that Darcy Hamilton took a few years ago.

Rowan told me with a smile, ” Here Honey, we got you a Thorn guitar for your Birthday.”

I grinned and thanked her. What a great idea. The photoshop work was excellent, and everybody had signed it. Really cool! Then my friend Kim Gimbal, host of the party, raised his hands over his head, and called for quiet.

“Dude, you’re not getting it,” he said. “We all chipped in and bought you a Ron Thorn Guitar for your Birthday!”

AMAZING! Rowan, with the help of fellow TGPer (and my friend since high school) Mark Robinson, and with donations from friends and relatives conspired with Ron Thorn to buy me a custom made Ron Thorn guitar for my 50th Bday. And Kim was right - I didn't get it at first, but when I did ...OMFG - WOW!

I'm definitely not worthy. This is a gift that would truly humble anyone, as it has humbled me.

Very Special Thanks to Rowan - I love you Baby, you totally got me!
Special thanks to Mark Robinson and Family - I'm speechless and thrilled.
Thanks to Mom and Dad - you're the best!
Thanks to Ron Thorn - you sly dog, keeping secrets like that!

So now, what kind of wood? Trem or Stud? Semi hollow or solid? P-90's or HBs? Two vols and one tone or ....

Thank you so much to all who contributed, and to all who came to one of the great parties, and to those who were unable to attend in person.

No one I'm aware of is more fortunate than me.

    Thanks to All, Dana O.
Conspirators include: Peter Copeland, Leon C, Gil Ayan, Cesar Saramiento, Adam Stark, Larry Rosen, Larry Weissenborn, Darrel Johnston, Rick Davidson, Dave Nelson, Mike Kenney, Mark Hattersley, Robin Hattersley, Dave Bucholz, Joe Robinson, Greg Brown, Nancy Olsen, Julie Olsen, Ellen and Jim Jansen, Chris Boarman, Shawn Fabian, and many others too numerous to mention in print.

Congrats man, what a great B-day gift!

Having played #37 myself for a bit I can attest that it is one magical guitar. I wasn't able to spend too long with it but it was one of those where you strum one chord or play one lick and can tell it overflows with the "magic stuff".

Happy Belated B'day! That's great, you are one lucky feller. I'm sure you are quite worthy, many of those closest to you seem to think so. I'm convinced you'll love this guitar forever. I don't have any suggestions for wood etc. I wouldn't know where to start either!:AOK :dude :)

    Dana,

I was right in front of you at the Fuchs booth at that NAMM show when you were playing Ron's #37. You had a "heavenly" look on your face (or smiling like a pig in sh__!).
Glad all of your friends (and I mean FRIENDS) and your killer girlfriend know what you really like and like you enough to get it for you.

Enjoy buddy and a Belated Happy Birthday!

For my 50th birthday I was taken out to dinner by two friends who were obviously mad at each other; the evening just sucked, it was tense and terse and depressing. I've been giving myself 50th birthday presents ever since, including my Thorn SC#17 now on order. My two Suhrs and Koll were 50th birthday presents to myself as well, as are the dried Rainier cherries from Trader Joe's that I can't stop munching. Not to mention the daily green tea lattes (with soy) or the recent Nordstrom's Men's sale . . . but I'm not bitter or anything.

Oh, and Heh, Congratulations and Happy B'day!
